Phantom Blade Zero launches tomorrow on PC in the US and releases globally for the PS5 on October 29. Critics are already calling it one of the best action titles of the year. The review embargo lifted this weekend, and the game secured an impressive 88 Metascore on PC from 42 critic reviews. Notably, the PC version currently features zero negative reviews. Furthermore, the PS5 version sits at a strong 86 Metascore. Major gaming outlets universally praise the exhilarating combat systems. However, reviewers consistently criticize the convoluted storytelling and frustrating level geometry.
Phantom Blade Zero Review: Unmatched Wuxia Combat
S-GAME successfully translated cinematic Wuxia action into a highly responsive video game format. You play as Soul, an elite assassin who has only 66 days left to live. During this journey, you engage in free-flowing, dance-like battles. Attacking and defending happen simultaneously, mirroring classic martial arts films.
The developers discarded the traditional stamina bar constraint. Instead, crucial actions like dodging and parrying cost absolutely no stamina. Players must manage a Sha-Chi meter instead, which slowly depletes when you block or launch heavy attacks. Parrying enemy strikes heavily drains their Sha-Chi, which eventually shatters their guard. Additionally, you can instantly replenish your own Sha-Chi by quickly swapping between your two equipped primary weapons.
Deep Arsenals & Memorable Bosses
The game offers dozens of unique weapons, and each features a distinct moveset. The Outlaw Warblade, for instance, drains your health for heavy damage but restores it during light attacks. Players can freely refund their upgrade materials, which actively encourages build experimentation. Furthermore, players utilize limited-use secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. These specialized tools provide ranged attacks or effortlessly shatter enemy armor.
This deep combat arsenal truly shines during the massive roster of memorable boss fights. Bosses feature unique attack phases, diverse mechanics, and incredible visual spectacle. Fortunately, multi-phase boss encounters utilize generous checkpoint systems. If you die during a second phase, you immediately restart at that exact phase. Interestingly, standard enemies do not respawn when you rest or die. This design choice removes exploration tension but drastically simplifies backtracking. Standard enemies are also quite easy to defeat, which can occasionally lead to tedium outside of boss fights.
A Stunning Kungfupunk World
The development team describes the visual aesthetic as “Kungfupunk”. This unique style seamlessly blends traditional Chinese architecture with heavy steampunk machinery. The semi-open world features eight distinct, beautifully detailed maps. These expansive zones include blood-stained forests, steam-powered boats, and massive industrial towers.
Players navigate these regions using minimalist, hand-drawn maps that encourage organic exploration. Hidden side quests offer worthwhile rewards, including a completely missable training subplot featuring Donnie Yen. A standard main story playthrough takes roughly 25 to 30 hours. Meanwhile, full completionist runs will push playtime between 45 and 50 hours.
Narrative & Technical Flaws
Despite the phenomenal gameplay, Phantom Blade Zero struggles heavily with its narrative delivery. Reviewers found the core story chaotic, disjointed, and poorly communicated. The campaign relies heavily on confusing flashbacks that jump erratically across multiple time periods without adequate context. Furthermore, essential world-building details are hidden inside tedious collectible text logs.
Reviewers also highlighted frustrating issues with the level geometry. Invisible walls frequently block basic platforming attempts, which consistently leads to cheap environmental deaths. Finally, while the framerate mostly holds a smooth 60 FPS on the PS5 Pro, specific map areas and chaotic boss fights suffer from noticeable performance drops.
