Pakistan is set to resume offshore oil and gas exploration after a 20-year gap, with a Turkish Petroleum seismic survey vessel expected to arrive in Karachi between November 17 and 20. The development marks a new step in Pakistan’s efforts to explore domestic energy resources and reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad to review security, maritime, and operational arrangements for the vessel’s arrival and upcoming exploration activities. Malik described the project as an important milestone in Pakistan-Türkiye energy cooperation and assured the Turkish side of the government’s full support. He also expressed his intention to personally welcome the vessel in Karachi.
The seismic survey will help map the seabed and identify potential offshore oil and gas reserves before any drilling begins. The initiative follows Pakistan and Türkiye’s earlier plans for joint offshore exploration and the awarding of major offshore exploration blocks. Officials expect the survey to support efforts to discover domestic energy resources and strengthen Pakistan’s energy security.
