More than 100 vehicles fitted with fake, cloned or tampered number plates were detected and seized in July alone, as the Safe City Authority intensifies monitoring through its AI-powered surveillance network.
A Safe City spokesperson said the artificial intelligence-based camera system can instantly identify suspicious, fake or altered number plates and generate automatic alerts. Once an alert is triggered, all relevant vehicle information is immediately shared with nearby field units to enable prompt action.
According to Safe City data, the July crackdown reflects the growing effectiveness of AI-powered cameras in identifying violations across the city.
The spokesperson cautioned that anyone found using fake or modified number plates could face fines as well as criminal proceedings under the law. Concealing an original number plate using tape, cloth or any other material, along with altering a registration number in any way, constitutes a legal offence, officials said.
