Apple Intelligence is finally set to enter China after a long wait. The company’s AI platform has received approval from Chinese regulators, clearing a major hurdle for its launch in one of Apple’s biggest markets.
Apple first introduced Apple Intelligence 21 months ago. Since then, users in several countries have gained access to its AI features. However, iPhone users in China have been left out because of the country’s strict rules for artificial intelligence services.
According to reports, Apple Intelligence has now been registered with China’s cyberspace regulator for use on iPhones. In China, all AI products must receive government approval before companies can release them to the public.
The approval also sheds light on Apple’s local AI partners. A recent report, citing a source familiar with the matter, said that Apple Intelligence in China will use AI models developed by Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Baidu.
Alibaba has confirmed that its Qwen AI model will power some Apple Intelligence features in China. The integration will cover iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS devices sold in the country.
Baidu has also confirmed its partnership with Apple. A company spokesperson said Apple is working with Baidu to develop Apple Intelligence features specifically for Chinese iPhone users.
Although the regulatory approval marks an important milestone, Apple has not announced when the service will actually become available in China. The statement from the regulator did not mention a launch date either.
For now, Chinese users will have to wait a little longer. However, the latest approval suggests that Apple Intelligence is finally moving closer to its long-delayed debut in the country.
