Recently, Blizzard officially announced the end of an era for Diablo IV. The studio confirmed it will not release any more expansions for this game. Instead, developers are shifting their focus completely. They will concentrate on upcoming seasonal content and the newly announced Diablo V.
The End of the Diablo IV: Age of Hatred
Diablo IV launched back in June 2023. Since then, the game has received two major expansions. First, Blizzard released ‘Vessel of Hatred’ in 2024. Subsequently, the studio launched ‘Lord of Hatred’ earlier this year. This recent release brought the current storyline to a close. Most fans expected a new narrative arc for future expansions. However, that plan will not materialize.
Speaking at BlizzCon 2026, Game Director Brent Gibson clarified the studio’s stance in a private interview. He stated that the team told the “Story of Hatred” effectively. They achieved a satisfying conclusion with ‘Mephisto’. Therefore, Blizzard is now moving forward.
A Surprise Diablo V Reveal
During the same event, Blizzard surprised everyone. They officially announced Diablo V. Furthermore, they revealed key details about the upcoming sequel. The new game takes place 100 years in the future. In this new timeline, Diablo has completely conquered Sanctuary. Consequently, the narrative will shift away from Hatred and focus directly on the “Story of Terror”.
This fast turnaround will surprise many players. Previously, fans waited 11 years between Diablo III and Diablo IV. Now, Blizzard plans a much shorter six-year gap. The studio aims to release the sequel in three years.
Additionally, Blizzard teased the first playable classes for the new game. Players will see two returning favorites. Moreover, the developers will introduce one completely brand-new class.
So, what happens to Diablo IV now? The game will still receive regular seasonal updates. In fact, Blizzard will use these seasons to build the road to the sequel. Gibson explained that the 100-year time jump gives the team plenty of room to experiment. Thus, they will use fan reactions from season to season to shape the ongoing continuity leading up to Diablo V.
