Rockstar is fundamentally changing how it tells the story in Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6. The upcoming title will not rely on the free-flowing mission structure of GTA 5. Instead, the developers are bringing back a major narrative tool from Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar officially confirmed that GTA 6 will use “Chapters” to guide players through the Vice City story.
Borrowing from Red Dead Redemption 2
GTA 5 allowed players to bounce freely between three protagonists. This created a straightforward mission structure. However, Red Dead Redemption 2 took a different path. It focused on Arthur Morgan across a series of distinct chapters. Fans loved this focused approach. Now, co-studio head Rob Nelson confirms this exact chapter system returns for GTA 6.
During a recent interview with Trois Couleurs, Nelson explained the decision. He did not reveal the exact number of chapters. For context, Red Dead Redemption 2 featured six chapters and two epilogues. However, Nelson emphasized that chapters allow the team to move naturally between narrative beats. As the story progresses, the central characters, Jason and Lucia, will experience a clearer sense of progression.
GTA 6 Story Chapters & Narrative Layers
The writing process directly dictates the game’s world design. Rupert Humphries, Senior Vice President of Narrative, establishes the core story beats. He drafts a brief summary detailing the characters’ starting point, their current situation, and their next destination. Consequently, the development team builds specific missions, set-pieces, and locations around these critical plot points.
This structure pushes and pulls players through the map. Yet, Rockstar ensures the game remains highly open. Nelson noted that the developers actively plan for player freedom. After outlining the “tentpole missions”, they ask what happens if a player decides to do something different. They explicitly plan for moments when the player wants to go “off the rails”. Therefore, chapters act as a catalyst for progression without destroying the franchise’s signature open-world freedom.
A More Grounded Vice City
Ultimately, GTA 6 promises massive ambition. Rockstar designed a much larger version of Vice City. Furthermore, the world features increased interactivity, more enterable buildings, and detailed NPC interactions.
GTA 5 did not need a chapter format because of its three-character dynamic. Conversely, GTA 6 focuses intensely on Jason and Lucia. Rockstar has heavily emphasized their relationship and the consequences of their actions. Ultimately, the new chapter system will ground their story while letting players explore a highly detailed, modern open world.
