OpenAI has announced a major update for ChatGPT users on its Free and Go plans. The company is removing limits on text conversations, allowing users to chat without being forced to switch to a lower-powered AI model. At the same time, it is bringing a newer AI model and a new Think feature to more users.
Free and Go users will soon use GPT-5.6 Luna by default. It replaces GPT-5.5 Instant, which has been the standard model until now. GPT-5.6 Luna is the smallest version of the GPT-5.6 family that OpenAI introduced in July.
The rollout of GPT-5.6 Luna will begin later this week. Then, next week, OpenAI will introduce unlimited text chats for Free and Go users. The same update will also add a new Think button. This feature lets users decide how much reasoning ChatGPT should use before answering.
However, some limits will remain. Free and Go users will still face restrictions on file uploads and image generation.
OpenAI is also updating GPT-5.6 Sol, its flagship model for Plus and Pro subscribers. According to the company, the updated model delivers more direct answers, uses cleaner formatting, and avoids adding unnecessary details. As a result, users asking simple questions will receive short and clear responses. Meanwhile, people working on research or planning tasks will get more detailed answers with the main recommendation staying easy to follow.
The company also says the new GPT-5.6 Sol makes fewer factual mistakes. This improvement is especially noticeable in responses involving numbers, dates, sources, rules, and assumptions. During OpenAI’s internal testing, the updated model produced at least one factual error about 68% less often than GPT-5.5 Instant. The evaluation covered financial, medical, and legal prompts that required accurate factual information.
In addition, Plus and Pro subscribers will receive an upgraded Think feature. Instead of a single button, they will see a slider that ranges from “instant” to “pro” thinking levels. Users can keep responses fast for everyday questions or increase the thinking level for research, planning, writing, coding, or other tasks that need deeper analysis.
OpenAI also confirmed that GPT-5.6 Sol used in ChatGPT Work and Codex will not change with this update. The company says the latest version has been optimized for everyday conversations and will only be available through the standard ChatGPT chat experience.
