The debt of Punjab has climbed to nearly Rs1.76 trillion, marking a Rs75 billion increase over the past two years and pushing the per capita debt burden of every resident of the province to Rs13,538.
Official figures show the debt of Punjab stood at Rs1.685 trillion in June 2024 and rose to Rs1.757 trillion by June 2025.
The entire outstanding amount owed by the province consists of external loans, with no domestic debt recorded in the latest figures.
The continued rise in borrowing comes as provincial and federal governments across Pakistan face mounting fiscal pressures and financing requirements.
With liabilities nearing Rs1.76 trillion, debt management and financial sustainability are expected to remain central concerns for policymakers in the months ahead.
