Google has officially begun construction on its largest artificial intelligence hub outside the United States. The tech giant held a groundbreaking ceremony in Visakhapatnam, India. Popularly known as Vizag, this southeastern port city in Andhra Pradesh will host a massive $15 billion investment over the next five years. Google initially pledged this funding in October 2025. Now, the AI megahub project in India is officially underway.

A Gigawatt-Scale AI Ecosystem
Bikash Koley, Google’s Vice President for Global Infrastructure, called the ceremony the first concrete milestone in Google’s commitment to India’s digital future. Furthermore, he detailed a $15 billion blueprint to deliver a full-stack AI ecosystem.
A gigawatt-scale data center campus serves as the core of this project. Google purpose-built this facility to handle the immense computational demands of the AI era. Consequently, the hub will directly power major services like Google Search and Gemini. Nara Lokesh, the Information Technology Minister for Andhra Pradesh, expressed his excitement about the project. He highlighted the journey to build India’s most coveted AI and deep-tech hub.
AI Megahub in India: Strategic Subsea Connectivity
Beyond raw computing power, the Vizag megahub physically expands global network infrastructure. Specifically, Google is pitching Vizag as a landing point for new submarine internet cables. These lines will link India directly to Singapore.
Currently, India relies heavily on existing cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai. Therefore, establishing Vizag as an international subsea gateway adds vital network diversity. Ultimately, these new strategic fiber optic routes will increase the resilience of India’s digital backbone and significantly improve economic security.
Empowering ‘Vikshit Bharat 2047’
The AI megahub in India requires massive collaboration. Google partnered with the Government of India, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Adani Connects, and Nextra by Airtel to execute the project. Together, these entities aim to fuel the national “Vikshit Bharat 2047” vision.
Additionally, Google committed to uplifting the local ecosystem. The company plans to deploy its full AI stack to empower Indian consumers and enterprises. Furthermore, the hub will support local business growth, help entrepreneurs, and advance regional skills development for a sustainable future.
