Google’s iOS app now includes Simplify, an AI feature powered by its Gemini model. The simple job of this AI is that it converts dense or technical web text into clear, conversational summaries without forcing users to leave the current page.
When browsing within the Google app on iPhone or iPad, users can highlight any block of text and tap the Simplify icon. A pop-up window then displays a concise version of the selected text that preserves key details. All processing happens on the device, ensuring user data remains private and never leaves the iPhone or iPad. And it does not even matter whether the text is from articles, research papers, or some forum posts.
In trials, users found Simplify especially helpful for medical and technical content. For example, terms like “emphysema” were rendered as “damage to lung tissue” and “fibrosis” as “tissue scarring,” significantly improving comprehension without oversimplifying for non-technical users.
Google says testers rated these AI-generated summaries as significantly more useful than the original passages.
Simplify joins a growing list of in-context AI tools such as Chatgpt’s “Explain This” and Microsoft Edge’s AI summarizer. Industry analysts predict that seamless, on-device text simplification will soon become a standard feature across both mobile and desktop browsers, helping users manage information overload and understand complex topics more easily.
Simplify is available now in Google app version 6.110 and above on iOS, rolling out first to English-language users in the United States.
Google has not announced plans to bring the feature to Android or desktop browsers yet, but says it is exploring wider availability in future updates.
