Apple is preparing a handy new feature for people who juggle two iPhones. Called iPhone Handoff, it will let a single phone number move between two devices. The feature is set to arrive with iOS 27, expected later this month.
Apple only briefly mentioned this feature during its WWDC 2026 keynote in June. However, the company never explained how it would actually work. Recently, a MacRumors forum member shared a detailed demonstration. They simulated two iPhones using Device Hub in Xcode 27, revealing the setup process clearly.
The system relies on eSIM technology rather than cloning a physical SIM. First, users designate one iPhone as the main device. That primary phone keeps the user’s existing eSIM. Meanwhile, the second iPhone becomes a companion device. It then receives a companion eSIM tied to the same number.
The switching happens automatically based on usage. According to the demonstration, the number follows whichever iPhone is unlocked and actively being used. Additionally, a notification appears in the Dynamic Island whenever the number switches devices. Location sharing also follows the active phone, so Find My contacts see the device currently carrying the line.
Users set everything up through the Settings app under Cellular. Notably, the main iPhone retains control over all cellular settings. The companion phone does not get independent cellular management. This suggests Apple treats the pairing as asymmetric rather than two equal devices.
The practical benefits are clear for many users. Someone could keep a newer iPhone as their full-time device. They could then use an older one for travel or exercise. This avoids the risk of losing access to banking or work apps.
However, one major catch could limit the feature’s reach. iPhone Handoff depends entirely on carrier support to function. The mobile network must build companion eSIM provisioning into its backend systems. Reports suggest T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany could support it first.
Apple has not yet published a full list of supported carriers. As a result, availability in markets like Pakistan remains uncertain for now. Both iPhones will also need to run iOS 27 for the feature to work.
