Apple could reserve one of the iPhone 18 Pro series’ biggest camera upgrades for the Pro Max. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive next month. Both models are rumored to feature the faster A20 Pro chipset, larger batteries, and upgraded cameras.
However, a new claim suggests the variable-aperture main camera may not come to both models. The source says Apple could limit the feature to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The rumored camera system would need more internal space than a standard fixed-aperture setup. The larger Pro Max chassis could give Apple enough room to fit the hardware.
The source did not provide further details about the camera or its expected capabilities. Still, the claim adds to earlier reports about Apple’s plans for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The tipster also previously claimed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will weigh 240g and measure 9mm thick. That would make it slightly heavier and thicker than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Apple has used exclusive camera hardware on its Pro Max models before. The iPhone 15 Pro Max introduced a tetraprism telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom in 2023.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro remained limited to a 3x optical telephoto camera. If the latest rumor is accurate, Apple could once again use the Pro Max model to offer a more advanced camera system.
