The post-apocalyptic tunnels of Moscow are calling you back. Yesterday, 4A Games and Deep Silver officially shocked fans at the Xbox Games Showcase. They finally dropped the first gameplay trailer for Metro 2039. This upcoming fourth installment looks stunning, but it also promises an incredibly grim experience.
The franchise has been 4A Games’ bread-and-butter shooter series since Metro 2033 launched in 2010. Following the open-world setup of 2019’s Metro Exodus and the VR spin-off Metro Awakening, the studio is shifting gears. Metro 2039 goes back to basics. However, major changes are coming to the story you think you know.

A Darker Moscow, A New Stranger & Linear Survival
The brand-new gameplay trailer clocks in at exactly 2 minutes and 44 seconds. Right away, the footage reveals a massive structural shift. Metro 2039 completely abandons the experimental, open approach of Metro Exodus. Instead, the developers are returning to the original gameplay formula. You can expect a tight, linear structure that focuses heavily on an intense story.
Furthermore, the game introduces a major narrative shakeup. Longtime protagonist Artyom is officially exiting the series. Instead, players will take control of a brand-new main character known only as “The Stranger”.
This new hero must grapple with a harsh reality. A new Spartan regime has taken over, spearheaded by a figure named Fuher Hunter. To make matters worse, the developers warn that the surface world remains just as dangerous and deadly as ever after the events of Exodus. Therefore, you will need to rely heavily on tight gunplay, heavy atmospherics, and stealth-focused mechanics to survive.
Real-World Influence Sparks a Grittier Direction
Visually, Metro 2039 looks absolutely spectacular. However, the tone is noticeably darker than previous entries. This shift was entirely intentional. The developers openly shared that they envisioned this grittier tone as a direct creative response to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Interestingly, rumors heavily suggest that this was not always the plan. An entirely different version of Metro 2039 was allegedly in production at one point. However, the studio eventually scrapped that project. They chose to build this “super-grim” version from scratch instead.
So far, fan reactions to the showcase trailer are highly positive. Gamers love the cutting-edge visuals. In fact, the footage has even made fans eager to jump back into Stalker 2. This makes perfect sense because 4A Games actually shares deep roots with GSC Game World. Original Stalker developers left that studio years ago to create Metro 2033.
When Can You Play Metro 2039?
The Metro franchise has always pushed the absolute limits of graphics technology. For example, Metro Exodus Enhanced was famously the first game to exclusively use ray-traced lighting. Fans can certainly expect deep dives into new engine tricks very soon.
Fortunately, we now have an official launch window. Metro 2039 is slated for release in February 2027. The game will launch simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. More story trailers and gameplay deep dives will drop in the coming months as we wait for the final release.
