MG Motor Pakistan launched the second-generation MG HS and announced pricing for two hybrid variants at an event held Thursday. The new model is based on the latest global generation introduced in 2024.
Two Hybrid Variants Announced
The company will offer two hybrid powertrains in Pakistan. These include a conventional hybrid marketed as Hybrid+ and a plug-in hybrid variant branded as Super Hybrid. The Hybrid+ is priced at Rs 9.49 million while the Super Hybrid costs Rs 10.19 million. The new generation replaces the older HS that debuted in Pakistan in 2020 and brings a redesigned platform, updated styling, a more modern cabin and electrified powertrain options.
The Hybrid+ variant features a conventional hybrid system combining a gasoline engine with electric motor assistance. The Super Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid that features a larger 24.7 kWh battery according to global specifications. This allows it to be charged externally and driven on electricity for short distances. It offers an electric-only range of over 50 kilometers and produces a combined output of up to 209 kilowatts with 480 newton meters of torque.
Competitive Market Positioning
The launch comes as demand for crossover SUVs and hybrid vehicles continues to grow in Pakistan with increasing competition in the segment. The plug-in hybrid variant of the MG HS will compete with models such as the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV and Haval H6 PHEV. The hybrid variant will rival the Kia Sportage L HEV, Haval H6 HEV and Hyundai Tucson HEV.
At Rs 9.49 million, the MG HS Hybrid+ enters the same space as hybrid SUVs such as the Haval Jolion HEV, Toyota Corolla Cross HEV and other Chinese hybrid offerings. The Super Hybrid PHEV priced at Rs 10.19 million targets buyers looking at plug-in hybrid SUVs. On paper, the pricing looks aggressive especially for the PHEV variant.
However, the real test will be fuel economy, charging convenience, after-sales support, parts availability and resale value. The key question is whether MG can back the new product with strong after-sales support, parts availability and real-world fuel economy in Pakistani conditions.
