Nintendo officially dropped a massive announcement at the latest Nintendo Direct. The company revealed a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Prior to this official reveal, known industry insider Nate the Hate leaked the project’s existence. Now, fans finally have concrete confirmation. Ocarina of Time remains one of the highest-reviewed games in history. Therefore, seeing it improved for next-generation hardware is incredibly exciting for the community.

A Fresh Look at the Classic Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The debut trailer opens with a brand-new voiceover. This narration focuses heavily on Hyrule and the iconic Kokiri Forest. Next, the video displays a tapestry featuring Link alongside the Great Deku Tree. Suddenly, this tapestry transitions directly into actual game footage.
As a result, fans received their first official glimpse at the modernized graphics. Unsurprisingly, these new visuals easily surpass the older Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 3DS versions. Unfortunately, the trailer ends quickly after this brief look.
Currently, Nintendo has not confirmed the exact scope of the project. Consequently, players do not know if this is a massive ground-up remake or a highly polished graphical remaster. However, the trailer kept things very minimal and familiar. Because of this, a faithful graphical upgrade seems much more likely. Nintendo clearly knows it cannot mess with such a beloved classic.
Release Window & Franchise Future
Nintendo officially confirmed a 2026 release window for the Ocarina of Time remake. While the company did not specify an exact launch date, Nate the Hate previously hinted at a Holiday release. Since we are already halfway through 2026, fans can expect the game to drop later this year.
Currently, September and October are filling up with game releases. Many developers want to avoid competing directly with Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI in November. However, Ocarina of Time holds massive mainstream appeal and does not need to worry about the competition. Therefore, it could comfortably launch in November ahead of Black Friday. Alternatively, an early December release makes perfect sense. This timing would allow many gamers to reinvent their childhood nostalgia right before Christmas.
Meanwhile, reports also highlight other exciting rumors for the franchise. For instance, a Ganondorf spin-off, similar in style to Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, could potentially arrive in 2027. Furthermore, the next major mainline entry might launch in 2028. This upcoming follow-up to Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reportedly features cross-dimensional gameplay.
For now, fans can simply look forward to revisiting a classic when the remake hits the Switch 2 later this year.
