PTA disowned the notification regarding ban on Telenor

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) took over the twitter to announce that it has not issued any notification regarding the ban on Telenor. PTA clarified that it is not planning to ban any cellular company.

Earlier there was a notification circulating on WhatsApp advising people to switch to another network or use all of their mobile balance and clear their easy paisa account before Dec 10, 2019, because PTA will ban all Telenor services from Dec 11.

PTA said in their tweet “PTA is aware of a false advertisement circulating via WhatsApp chat groups for users of a mobile operator. PTA clarifies that the aforementioned advertisement is fake,”

PTA also urged the users “to refrain from circulating it since it might generate confusion and inconvenience for consumers”.

Last week, the standing committee of the National Assembly, chaired by Ali Khan Jadoon was briefed by the Information Technology Board. IT Board advised the government to build a separate entity to tackle the fake news on social media. Concern raised when a fake government notification got leaked which sparked the anger in the power sector. IT Board urged the government to take action against such threats. NITB official said

“We are taking steps to curb fake news on social media. We have taken the Press Information Department into confidence, we have tried to ensure that there is social media news verification,”
