The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has imposed Rs3.41 billion in cumulative financial penalties on cellular mobile operators (CMOs) over the past four years. According to official documents, the penalties were linked to violations involving quality of service (QoS) and network coverage obligations.
The regulator has also stepped up enforcement against telecom operators that fail to meet required service standards. During the period, PTA issued 20 warning letters and 86 show-cause notices (SCNs) to mobile operators.
The action reflects growing regulatory pressure on telecom companies to improve network performance and meet their license requirements.
PTA has also set a clear process for operators found with QoS or coverage issues. They are required to submit a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to explain the reasons behind the problems. In addition, operators must provide a time-bound corrective action plan. They are also required to submit a compliance report within 30 days.
PTA then verifies the reported improvements through follow-up surveys. This allows the regulator to check whether operators have addressed the reported network issues. However, operators that fail to fix the problems can face stronger enforcement measures. These actions may include further financial penalties for continued non-compliance.
The latest figures show that PTA has increased its focus on telecom network quality across Pakistan. The regulator is now pushing mobile operators to improve coverage and maintain required service standards.
The move also highlights PTA’s efforts to ensure that telecom companies follow their license obligations. At the same time, the enforcement drive aims to improve the overall quality of mobile services for users across the country.
