The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has issued 11,752 e-challans for overloading violations across Punjab this month using AI-powered cameras and its Virtual Traffic Management System.
According to a PSCA spokesperson, authorities recorded 6,204 cases involving vehicles carrying more passengers than permitted and 5,548 cases in which cargo extended beyond prescribed limits.
The system identifies violations through surveillance cameras and alerts traffic enforcement teams, enabling them to take timely action against offenders. The operation targets buses, trucks, tractor-trolleys, and other vehicles that pose safety risks due to overloading.
Authorities have warned that carrying excess passengers can increase the risk of serious road accidents, while cargo extending beyond a vehicle’s permitted dimensions can endanger other road users.
Materials such as iron rods and steel bars protruding from vehicles pose a particular threat to motorcyclists, who may suffer severe or fatal injuries in collisions. The PSCA is using its surveillance network to detect these violations and support traffic enforcement efforts across the province.
