TikTok is rolling out three new comment tools to boost engagement across the platform. The features give viewers more ways to respond to video clips. As a result, users can now react without relying solely on typed text. TikTok is rolling these tools out globally over the coming weeks.
The headline addition is voice comments. Viewers can now leave audio responses directly on videos. To do so, they simply tap a microphone icon in the comment window. The recorded message then appears with an audio file attached. Notably, TikTok also displays a translated text version below each voice comment.
These voice messages can run up to 60 seconds long. TikTok framed the feature around emotional expression. The company said voice comments make it easy to react to a meme, sing along, or respond to a plot twist. Importantly, this feature rolls out to users aged 18 and older over the next month.
“Whether you’re laughing at a meme, singing with a creator, or reacting to a sudden plot twist, Voice Comments make it easy to say what you’re feeling — no typing required,” TikTok said.
TikTok is also introducing polls within comments. However, only the video creator can add a poll. Each poll can include up to five response options. As votes arrive, creators can track results directly in the comment section. This lets them see how the conversation trends in real time. Comment polls are now available to all creators immediately.
The platform is expanding image options too. Users can now add photo carousel comments and live photo replies. Specifically, users can attach up to nine photos to a single comment. These images then expand into a scrollable carousel when tapped. Meanwhile, live photos let users share active, moving pictures as another response format.
As per the company:
With Photo Carousel Comments, people can now add up to 9 photos in a single comment, making it easy to share a full moment instead of just one frame. For instance, if someone wants to react to a travel video with their own vacation photos, they no longer have to pick just one, they can drop the whole album in a single comment.
Standard photo comments are already available globally. However, photo carousel comments will roll out over the next month. This staggered approach mirrors TikTok’s usual feature deployment strategy.
Ultimately, these updates serve TikTok’s broader engagement goals. Comment sections have become vital spaces for community building on the platform. By adding richer response formats, TikTok encourages more interaction on uploaded videos. Because higher engagement keeps users active longer, these tools could strengthen TikTok’s position against rival platforms. The features also give creators fresh ways to connect with their audiences directly.
