Pakistan Railways has suspended train services from Karachi after 17 wagons of a freight train derailed near Wahab Shah Railway Station in Matiari district, blocking both the up and down tracks on the main railway line through Sindh.
According to railway officials, restoration work could take up to 24 hours as engineering teams work to clear the derailed wagons and repair the damaged railway tracks.
The coal hopper train was en route from Karachi to Yousafwala when the accident occurred near Wahab Shah Railway Station. No casualties have been reported so far.
Officials said the derailment caused significant damage to the railway infrastructure, with tracks breaking at multiple locations, making restoration efforts more challenging.
Two relief trains, along with railway engineering and rescue teams, have been dispatched to the site. The teams are working to remove the damaged wagons, restore the tracks, and reopen both railway lines as quickly as possible.
The disruption has affected several passenger trains across Sindh. The Karakoram Express has been halted at Hyderabad, the Allama Iqbal Express at Kotri, and the Pakistan Express at Landhi.
Meanwhile, the Tezgam Express has been stopped at Drigh Road, while the Millat Express and Fareed Express have been held at Karachi Cantt station.
Railway authorities said several other trains have also been delayed or stopped at stations including Tando Adam, Hyderabad, Karachi, and Rohri due to the blockage.
Pakistan Railways has advised passengers to expect delays as restoration work continues, with train operations expected to resume once both tracks are declared safe for traffic.
