WhatsApp Call Is Here, Currently for Android Only

Earlier, it was found that WhatsApp could be entering the world of VoIP with the help of “WhatsApp Calls” It seems that there are mixed reports on reddit and it seems that currently the calls feature is still undergoing a “stealthy launch. According to reddit, the calls feature, while still in testing is currently only available by downloading the APK going on the official site and downloading the APK.

Alternatively, if you do manage to get the APK running, all you have to do is call a contact and they will also be able to take advantage of WhatsApp Call. Kind of like Inbox by GMail, but one call with a contact is enough to allow another user to avail the service.

For me, updating the app with the APK and Google Play was also a fruitless effort. I further deleted my WhatsApp (with a prior backing up) and even when installing the new APK, yielded no new features or changes. I am on 4.2.2 so maybe someone on 4.4 / 5.0 can have more luck?

According to reddit, The PlayStore is rolling out the Calls update in select regions at a steady pace. It will be a while before it comes to us in Pakistan. Until then, back up your conversations by going to settings, chat settings and choosing backup conversations.

Here are some screenshots taken from the original post on reddit.

If you still aren’t convinced on this being the real McCoy, feast your eyes on this screen recording in action! (the below is a YouTube video by the way.)

What do you think of WhatsApp call? if you get it working, please do let us know in the comments. I know I am eager to get this working on my phone!
