5G Spectrum Allocation Tied to Market Players Presence: PTA
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has indicated that the allocation of the 5G spectrum will depend on the presence of three or four major telecom players in the market. This was revealed during a briefing by PTA Chairman Major General (Retd.) Hafeez ur Rehman to the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom.
According to PTA officials, the auction of the 5G spectrum requires a policy directive from the Government of Pakistan. They emphasized that while Pakistan has been preparing for 5G deployment, certain challenges and prerequisites need to be addressed before moving forward.
PTA officials shared that trial permissions for 5G were granted back in 2017, allowing telecom companies to test the technology. Since then, an advisory committee has been formed to work on 5G-related matters, ensuring that the transition is smooth and aligned with global standards.
To support the initiative, PTA hired a consultant in November 2024, who has now submitted a report detailing the requirements and obstacles in implementing 5G. One of the key factors highlighted is that more spectrum is needed to roll out 5G services effectively. However, several challenges, including infrastructure limitations and market readiness, are hindering progress, PTA officials added.
One major factor influencing the 5G auction is the merger case between Telenor and Ufone, which is currently under review by the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP). The PTA emphasized that market competition will play a crucial role in deciding the spectrum allocation, as a healthy competitive environment is necessary for the successful adoption of 5G technology.
