Rumors suggest that Apple hasn’t abandoned its dream of a buttonless iPhone. Despite previous setbacks, the company is reportedly refining its solid-state haptic button technology, aiming for a seamless, touch-responsive experience without physical components.
Originally rumored for the iPhone 15 Pro under “Project Bongo,” solid-state buttons were expected to replace traditional physical buttons, offering improved durability, customizable touch sensitivity, and better water resistance.
However, persistent issues mainly unintended “mistouches” and inconsistent responsiveness forced Apple to put the project on hold.
The problem? While traditional buttons provide a tactile “click,” solid-state buttons rely on precise haptic feedback. Apple is struggling to ensure the buttons feel natural while avoiding accidental activations when users brush against them. Unlike past cancellations due to cost concerns, this delay is purely about functionality.
For now, Apple is said to be prioritizing advancements in display and battery technology. While the iPhone 17 Pro is unlikely to feature solid-state buttons, ongoing refinements suggest they could make an appearance in future iPhone models.
If rumors hold true, Apple’s vision of a button-free iPhone remains a work in progress rather than an abandoned dream.
