WhatsApp’s New On-Device Translation Lets You Translate Without Internet Access
WhatsApp is taking a significant step towards addressing language barriers within chats and channels by introducing an on-device translation feature, which is now available to a select group of beta users on Android.
The new translation capability, included in version 2.25.12.25 of WhatsApp Beta for Android, allows users to translate both chat messages and channel updates in real time without compromising privacy. This feature is being gradually rolled out and is expected to reach more beta testers over the coming weeks.
This distinctive feature relies on internal operations since all translations stay within the device rather than sending information to remote servers. End-to-end encryption stays secure because the system performs these operations locally without sharing messages with external servers. Users have the ability to submit translation feedback without Meta obtaining access to original or translated message content.
The translation function of WhatsApp provides support for five major languages together with Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian. The language pack must be installed before a user can access translation functions through the service. An optional language pack functions as an automatic translator for messages in various languages to support multiethnic group conversations.
Users will locate the translation tool activation toggle in the chat info screen, hence, they can set translation options specifically for each chat. Users can select their desired translation settings per chat to work automatically while others remain manual. To translate a single message, users need to access the “Translate” selection within the message menu.
The translation engine generates results through lightweight language packs, which lead to accuracy levels inferior to cloud-based translation services. The feature operates on the device, which enhances both speed and protects information privacy.
In addition to private chats and groups, this new feature also extends to WhatsApp Channels, making it easier for users to follow content shared in languages they don’t speak. Users will also have full control over their preferences and storage settings, including the ability to delete downloaded language packs when no longer needed.
