Sindh Govt Plans Unified System To Regulate Karachi Ride Hailing Services

The Sindh government is moving to implement a unified system for Karachi ride-hailing services regulation, aiming to improve safety, legality, and environmental impact across platforms like Careem and Yango.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the provincial government is working to bring all online taxi services in Karachi under one integrated and modern framework. He made the statement while presiding over a meeting of the transport department.

“This new system will provide passengers with secure, standardized, and legal ride-hailing options,” said Memon, adding that Karachi ride-hailing services regulation was now a key focus for the administration.

One Umbrella System, EV Taxis, and Women-Focused Transport

The minister’s spokesperson, Husain Mansoor, said that the move would affect all major platforms, including Careem and Yango. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Investment and Public-Private Partnership Qasim Naveed Qamar, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, and Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kamal Dayo also participated in the meeting.

Memon also shared that the government plans to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in Karachi. “The launch of an EV taxi service will not only enhance the city’s transport network but also significantly reduce environmental pollution,” he stated.

The transport department is exploring multiple models to make EV taxis accessible to the public through easy installment plans. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to expedite the previously announced initiative to provide pink electric scooters for women, aimed at increasing safe and independent travel options.

In a bid to further modernize urban transit, Memon revealed that double-decker buses will be added to Karachi’s transport fleet by June, with a larger batch of new buses expected by late June or early July. He said the upcoming fiscal year’s budget would prioritize funding for new commuter buses.

Earlier this year, the Sindh cabinet had already approved the procurement of 50 electric buses for Karachi, including 15 double-deckers and 1,000 pink electric motorcycles for women.
