Microsoft has committed to its largest investment ever in the United Kingdom, announcing a massive $30 billion plan between 2025 and 2028 to accelerate AI infrastructure and operations. The initiative, which includes building the UK’s largest supercomputer, is intended to solidify the country’s position as a global leader in AI and high-performance computing.
The announcement was made in conjunction with the UK-US Technology Partnership during US President Donald Trump’s state visit, highlighting strengthening ties between the two nations on critical technology and economic matters.
Powerful Supercomputer and Enhanced Infrastructure
A core part of Microsoft’s $30 billion commitment is a $15 billion capital expenditure for cloud and AI infrastructure. This funding will enable the construction of the UK’s most powerful supercomputer, featuring over 23,000 Nvidia GPUs.
This project will enable large-scale machine learning and generative AI model training within the UK. It will also reduce reliance on overseas compute infrastructure and meeting customer demand. Microsoft will develop the supercomputer in partnership with Nscale, a UK-based AI infrastructure company. They plan to locate the new facility at Nscale’s AI Campus in Loughton, Essex, and provide Microsoft Azure services to various economic sectors.
