Instagram has rolled out a new feature that allows users to re share any publicly posted Story to their own Stories feed even if they were not tagged in the original post. Previously, the platform only enabled resharing of Stories when the user had been tagged. The new option significantly expands that capability, giving every user access to an “Add to Your Story” button on public content with automatic attribution to the original creator.
The change aligns with the broader reposting tools Instagram introduced earlier this year, which allowed users to share public Reels and feed posts directly to their profiles. For creators and general users alike, this resharing functionality offers major advantages. It simplifies content amplification by removing the need to screenshot or download content before re uploading, preserving original quality and attribution. For businesses, influencers, and small creators, the update can increase exposure. When followers re share a Story, it appears as part of their personal Stories feed, introducing the original post to a potentially new audience beyond its first circle.
Instagram says the update is globally rolling out to both iOS and Android devices. Public account holders retain control through a privacy setting that lets creators disable the “Allow Sharing to Story” option if they prefer not to allow others to re share their Stories.
Some users and commentators speculate that the change may reduce the popularity of aggregator style accounts that re post content without credit, since official resharing ensures attribution remains intact.
