Pakistan’s Senate has taken up concerns over young children using social media without proper oversight, signaling rising unease among lawmakers. The issue surfaced during a recent session after Senator Falak Naz submitted a formal Notice for Attention.
Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry responded by calling the matter a national concern. He said the issue goes beyond routine policy debate and needs wider public discussion. According to him, unchecked access to digital platforms can create serious social risks for children.
Presiding Officer Sherry Rehman said the problem is not limited to technology alone. She explained that it cannot be sent only to the IT Committee. Several ministries are involved, which makes the issue more complex. Because of this, she proposed forming a special committee under the Senate Chairman’s guidance.
Sherry Rehman also stressed the legal side of the debate. She said the Ministry of Law must play a role due to the issue’s sensitive nature. Legal input, she added, is essential before any long-term steps are taken.
She repeated her support for a dedicated committee that would study the risks in detail. The committee would also suggest practical measures to protect children from unmonitored social media use.
The discussion reflects growing concern over how digital platforms affect minors. Lawmakers now see a clear need for national policies, parental awareness, and coordination between ministries to promote safer technology use for children.
