A recent leak suggests that Huawei and Oppo are testing a 1:1 square sensor for their front cameras. This design gained attention after it appeared in a major flagship lineup. Now, Chinese brands seem ready to try the same approach.
According to the source, both companies are experimenting with square selfie sensors. Unlike the usual rectangular sensors, a 1:1 sensor captures images in a square format.
Huawei could bring this feature to its camera-focused mid-range phones. The Nova 16 series is seen as the most likely option. If the plan moves ahead, Huawei would be among the first Chinese brands to adopt the square selfie camera.
Oppo, however, may take a more premium route. The company is reportedly preparing to use the square front camera sensor in its flagship lineup, possibly starting with the Find X10 series. The source also claims Oppo’s version will be more advanced than Apple’s. Still, the exact upgrades remain unclear.
The iPhone 17 series comes with an 18MP selfie camera that uses a 1:1 square sensor and supports auto zoom. Because of the square format, users can shoot in portrait and landscape mode without turning the phone. This makes framing easier and more flexible.
In addition, square photos work well on social media platforms. Many apps already support 1:1 content. So, the change feels practical rather than experimental.
