New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi says he still sends messages with clips of his flipper delivery to mentor Shane Warne, a legendary leg-spinner whose guidance shaped key parts of his bowling development.
The leg-break spinner told interviewer Nagraj Gollapudi that he sometimes texts videos of wickets taken with his flipper and adds a light‑hearted wish that the late Warne could see those deliveries in action.
The New Zealand leg-spinner said he admired the craft of the Warne while growing up and later learned tips directly from the Australian legend during two IPL seasons with Rajasthan Royals.
Sodhi added that Warne taught him some tricks around bowling the flipper, a variation he has worked on since his younger days and now uses more often at the international level.
He admitted it was a “shame” that the former Australia great is no longer alive to watch those clips but said he still appreciates the lessons and influence Warne had on his cricketing journey.
The spinner has developed a range of deliveries including the flipper, googly, slider and traditional leg‑break, mixing pace and spin to challenge batters and adapt his game to modern T20 demands.
The 33-year-old spinner has represented New Zealand in all three formats of the game since his debut and played a key role in the bowling department for the Kiwis over the years.
In red-ball cricket, the right-arm spinner has taken 58 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 43.10 and an economy rate of 3.71, while he has claimed 64 wickets in 54 ODIs.
In 38 T20I matches, Sodhi has taken 162 wickets at an average of 22.85 and an economy rate of 8.14, while he has also represented many franchises around the world in his career.
