A student at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Topi was found dead in his hostel room, prompting an official inquiry and the suspension of two administrators.
Officials said the first-year computer science student, a resident of Mardan district, was discovered in his room before dawn and his body was later moved to hospital.
Police said the student had apparently hanged himself using a trouser drawstring, and investigators have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
The institute administration said the dean of student affairs and the hostel warden were suspended while a five-member committee investigates the incident.
Students gathered near the institute’s main gate to protest, raising concerns about the absence of doctors and ambulance services at the campus medical centre during late-night emergencies.
Police officials said a formal case could be registered depending on the inquiry’s findings, which will examine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and determine possible responsibility.
Local journalists and community members also expressed sympathy with the student’s family, while discussions continued about campus medical facilities and emergency services available to students during incidents at night.
Earlier this year, police in Lahore began investigating a suspected suicide attempt after a 21-year-old female student fell from the fourth floor at the University of Lahore.
The student, identified as Fatima and enrolled in the Doctor of Pharmacy programme, survived the fall but suffered serious injuries, while investigators suspected domestic reasons behind the incident.
Following the incident, the university suspended on-campus classes indefinitely and shifted teaching online while police continued the investigation and planned to record the student’s statement.
