The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hold a hearing on Tuesday on a petition filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) seeking an increase of Rs0.82 per unit in electricity prices under the monthly fuel adjustment charges (FAC) for May.
If approved, the increase would add an estimated Rs12 billion to the electricity bills of the consumers.
According to the petition, a total of 12.638 billion units of electricity were generated in May. The actual average fuel cost stood at Rs9.25 per unit, against a projected cost of Rs8.43 per unit, a difference of Rs0.82 per unit that forms the basis of the adjustment request.
The generation mix for May comprised hydel sources at 33.27 percent, imported coal at 13.54 percent, local coal at 11.66 percent, local gas at 8.31 percent, and furnace oil at 0.16 percent.
NEPRA will review the figures submitted by CPPA before issuing its decision. The adjustment, if approved, will apply to consumers across the country, including Karachi.
