Google has added several AI features to Google Vids, its video creation app for work. The update, announced on April 2, 2026, includes higher quality video exports, AI music generation, and virtual avatar characters. Google launched Vids in April 2024 as a simplified tool for creating professional video content using templates, stock images, and script generation.
The biggest addition is AI-powered avatars. You will be able to create virtual characters to narrate your videos. Google is letting users customize appearance, swap outfits, and change backgrounds while keeping the avatar’s voice and identity consistent across clips. The feature is aimed at content creators, educators, and businesses looking to produce video without appearing on camera themselves.
TikTok has been developing similar virtual characters for e-commerce. MIT Technology Review reported in 2023 these AI avatars are already used in China to live-stream product sales around the clock, generating thousands of dollars daily for brands. Google’s move brings the same concept into its Workspace ecosystem, giving businesses a direct path to producing avatar-led content at scale.
Google is also adding music generation tools powered by its Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models. Users on Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions will be able to generate custom soundtracks ranging from 30-second clips to three-minute tracks. The tool lets you describe the mood or tone you want, and the system generates an original track to match your video.
On the video quality side, Google Vids now uses its latest Veo 3.1 model for higher quality exports. All personal Vids accounts will receive 10 free video generations per month, with additional capacity available through paid subscriptions.
Two other features round out the update. Google launched a Vids Screen Recorder Chrome extension, letting users capture content from anywhere on the web. Vids users will also be able to publish videos directly to YouTube, removing the step of downloading and re-uploading.
Google first added AI image-to-video generation to Vids in August 2025, and followed with improved Veo AI video generation tools in January 2026. This latest update pushes the tool further into territory occupied by dedicated video creation platforms and social media apps alike.
Google is positioning Vids as the default video tool for its Workspace users, tying it directly into its existing ecosystem of Docs, Slides, and now YouTube.
