Metro 2039: Returning to the Moscow Tunnels
The official Xbox First Look YouTube video provides an intriguing description. It promises a “journey into the dark heart of post-apocalyptic Moscow in a harrowing conflict for the very soul of the Metro”.
Furthermore, this hints at a major shift from the previous mainline entry, Metro Exodus. In that title, players fled the city to explore the wider world. Currently, developers have not confirmed if series protagonist Artyom will return. Therefore, Metro 2039 could feature a familiar face or start a completely new story.
Reveal Schedule & Platform Details
Xbox will premiere the Metro 2039 First Look video on YouTube on April 16 at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET. Additionally, the video description confirms the game operates as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. However, Microsoft has not announced if the game will launch on Xbox Game Pass.

The Metro video game series adapts the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky. 4A Games, a Ukrainian studio founded by former S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers, launched the first game, Metro 2033, in March 2010. Since then, the franchise has released a core trilogy. Recently, the series also received a VR spinoff titled Metro Awakening in November 2024.
