Today, the Pakistan Navy officially commissioned the first Hangor-Class submarine, PNS/M HANGOR. The commissioning ceremony took place in Sanya, China. President Asif Ali Zardari attended the event as the chief guest. Furthermore, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf joined senior officials from both the Pakistan Navy and China’s PLA (Navy).

According to an ISPR statement released in Rawalpindi on Thursday, this event represents a historic milestone for naval modernization. Subsequently, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the COAS, and the CDF congratulated the entire nation on achieving this milestone.
Advanced Hangor-Class Submarine Strengthening Maritime Defense
President Zardari emphasized that the advanced submarine significantly strengthens Pakistan’s maritime defense. Consequently, it affirms the nation’s resolve to maintain a robust, balanced, and credible defense posture. He stated that Pakistan remains fully capable of defending its sovereignty, ensuring the security of its economic lifelines, and protecting its maritime interests.
Additionally, a post on X from the President of Pakistan reiterated that regional stability requires effective deterrence. The commissioning also reflects another chapter in the time-tested, strategic partnership between Pakistan and China.
Advanced Technology & Strategic Role
Admiral Ashraf highlighted the growing disruptions at critical maritime choke points. These disruptions increasingly threaten global trade and energy security. Therefore, maintaining a stable, rule-based maritime order demands technologically advanced naval forces. The new HANGOR Class Submarines feature Air Independent Propulsion, advanced sensors, and state-of-the-art weapons.
As a result, these submarines will serve as a key asset in preserving regional maritime order and stability. They will play a pivotal role in deterring aggression and securing vital Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.
A Historic Legacy
The name HANGOR holds a significant place in national history. Back in 1971, the earlier HANGOR became the first submarine to sink a warship since World War II. Today, PNS/M HANGOR carries this illustrious legacy forward. Ultimately, this cutting-edge vessel will modernize the fleet and aggressively bolster maritime defense capabilities.
