Mobile connectivity often becomes a headache for overseas Pakistanis right after landing in the country. To solve this, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) offers a temporary registration facility. This system allows overseas Pakistanis and foreign nationals to use their personal mobile phones for up to 120 days without paying FBR mobile taxes.
The Device Registration System (DRS) handles this temporary relief. Consequently, visitors can easily stay connected, use banking apps, and order ride-hailing services during short stays without facing sudden network blockages.
Who Qualifies for the 120-Day Exemption from Mobile Taxes?
This temporary registration specifically targets short-term visitors. You qualify if you are an overseas Pakistani or a foreign national visiting for vacations, family visits, or business trips.
However, PTA strictly limits this exemption to one personal mobile phone per applicant. You cannot use this facility for commercial devices or phones meant for local sale. Furthermore, the 120-day validity starts exactly from your date of arrival in Pakistan, not the date you submit your application. Therefore, you should complete the registration immediately after landing.
You cannot simply insert any local SIM card into your temporarily registered phone. First, you must ensure the Pakistani SIM is officially issued under your own name. The network must register it against your CNIC, NICOP, or passport.
During the online process, PTA pairs your phone’s IMEI number directly with your provided mobile number. Consequently, if you insert a different SIM later, mobile services will not work. For dual-SIM phones, you can add details for a second SIM, provided you officially own that number as well.
Meanwhile, foreign SIM users utilizing international roaming do not need to register their devices under this facility at all.
How to Register Your Mobile Phone Online
To begin the process, dial *#06# on your phone to find your IMEI numbers. Next, gather your passport, CNIC or NICOP, arrival and departure dates, and your locally registered mobile number.
Once you have your documents ready, follow these exact steps:
- Open the official PTA Device Registration System portal and sign up.
- Check your email, click the activation link, and log in to your account.
- Select the temporary registration option for overseas Pakistanis or foreign nationals.
- Enter your passport number, CNIC/NICOP, travel dates, mobile number, and IMEI carefully.
- Submit your application.
Once PTA verifies your details, the system pairs your mobile phone with your SIM.
If your stay extends beyond 120 days, the temporary registration expires. You must then follow the regular PTA registration process and pay all applicable FBR duties. If you visit Pakistan again, you can reuse the facility. However, you must apply using the exact same credentials. Finally, you can never register an already-used IMEI again using another person’s passport.
