Fans waited six years for an official multiplayer mode. Naughty Dog never delivered. Now, a modder is taking matters into their own hands. The Last of Us (TLOU) Part 2 is finally getting a multiplayer mode. However, PlayStation players will completely miss out on the action.
PC-Exclusive Release of The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Mode
The original Last of Us featured the Factions multiplayer mode, which became a massive hit. Consequently, fans expected a similar experience when TLOU Part 2 launched in 2020. The emotionally charged sequel earned widespread critical acclaim and won Game of the Year. Yet, it lacked a multiplayer component.
Initially, developers promised a standalone multiplayer game. Unfortunately, they canceled that project. Therefore, fans have not seen a proper Last of Us versus mode in over a decade.
Currently, Naughty Dog is busy developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Since TLOU Part 2 is now six years old, an official Factions-style PvP mode will likely never happen.
Therefore, modder Speclizer stepped up. Speclizer built a custom multiplayer mode featuring various characters from the game fighting each other. Recently, the modder released 25 minutes of actual gameplay footage. Furthermore, Speclizer promised a fast-approaching September release.

There is a major catch. This mod strictly targets the PC version of the game. Consequently, hardcore PlayStation fans will miss this entire experience.
Future PlayStation Titles Skipping PC
Mods give PC gaming a massive advantage. They consistently create unique experiences unavailable on traditional consoles. However, a disappointing shift is currently happening in the industry. Moving forward, future single-player PlayStation games will reportedly skip the PC platform entirely.
Therefore, modders cannot rescue future unannounced projects. For instance, if The Last of Us Part 3 eventually launches, modders will not have PC access to build custom modes. Hopefully, any future sequel includes a built-in multiplayer mode from day one. Otherwise, the franchise might never see an official online mode again. Until then, PC players have Speclizer to thank for keeping the multiplayer dream alive.
