Honda has announced a major upgrade for its in-car technology by replacing Google Assistant with the new Google Gemini AI assistant in selected vehicles. The new system lets drivers use natural, everyday speech instead of specific voice commands. It also understands the context of a conversation, making voice interactions more flexible and useful while driving.
Unlike the older assistant, Gemini can remember previous questions during a conversation. For example, drivers can pause a discussion to focus on traffic and continue it later without starting over. The system also learns from user interactions over time to better understand spoken requests.
Gemini AI Offers Smarter Hands-Free Assistance
Google Gemini can help drivers with several everyday tasks without taking their hands off the steering wheel. It can summarize daily news, suggest nearby restaurants, create travel plans, and even help users brainstorm ideas for work. This hands-free experience reduces the need to use touchscreen menus and helps drivers stay focused on the road.
However, the new AI assistant is only available in Honda vehicles that include the required Google built-in hardware. As a result, many lower-priced models will not receive the upgrade.
Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda National Auto Sales, said connected technology has become an important part of today’s driving experience. She added that the company wants to help drivers stay informed and productive while traveling.
In the US, the Civic Sedan is available in five trim levels. However, the three most affordable versions do not support Google Gemini. Buyers must choose the Civic Si, which starts at $31,495, or the Civic Sport Touring Hybrid, starting at $32,395, to access the new AI assistant.
Honda is offering wider Gemini support in its electrified lineup. The recently discontinued Honda Prologue included the technology as standard on every trim. The upcoming Honda Prelude sports coupe will also offer Gemini across all model variants.
The company is also expanding the feature to larger vehicles. The 2026 Honda Pilot and Passport SUVs include Gemini as standard on every trim. Meanwhile, the CR-V only gets the feature on the premium Sport Touring Hybrid model. The Ridgeline pickup and Odyssey minivan do not support Google Gemini in the current model year.
Honda is also keeping physical controls for key functions instead of moving everything to touchscreen menus. While some automakers have removed many buttons, Honda continues to offer traditional controls for features like climate settings and audio, making everyday use simpler for drivers.
