Tech-savvy gamers have successfully booted the PS5 exclusive Astro Bot on a modern PC. Discord users RSantila and Nemmax achieved this major milestone using SharpEmu, an emulator dedicated to playing PS5 titles on PC operating systems. Because the current Sony console utilizes AMD technology, players knew this breakthrough was only a matter of time.
However, getting the game to run perfectly remains a work in progress.

Major Breakthrough But Astro Bot Still NOT Fully Playable
Currently, Astro Bot is not fully playable on SharpEmu. Nemmax only reached the PlayStation Studios title screen before the emulator crashed. Furthermore, the introductory video ran at a very low frame rate and displayed choppy visuals. Despite these severe limitations, this attempt marks the farthest anyone has progressed in getting Astro Bot to run on PC.
Originally released in September 2024, Astro Bot is a massive 3D platformer featuring 90 levels. It heavily features cameos from various Sony franchises and third-party games with historical ties to the PlayStation brand. Consequently, the game acts as a love letter to three decades and five generations of console history. The title even won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. Two years later, it still remains an integral part of the PS5 lineup.
Antitrust Lawsuit Threatens Digital-Only Push
This emulation news arrives just days after PlayStation confirmed a controversial new policy. Starting in January 2028, the company will step away from physical game releases entirely. Sony later clarified that it will still reprint physical copies for PS5 games released before this deadline. However, that clarification has not stopped relentless criticism.
Consequently, two legislators from Mexico are currently considering an antitrust lawsuit against PlayStation. The lawmakers claim that forcing a fully digital ecosystem creates a dangerous monopoly on PlayStation games. Furthermore, they argue this move severely hurts players who lack access to high-speed internet throughout the country.
Sony’s Secret Emulator Prototype
As of right now, Sony has not officially commented on the Astro Bot emulation project. Interestingly, the company actually has a long history with emulators.
Former PlayStation game developer Brian Watson recently revealed a forgotten project codenamed “PlayStation Pulga”. Sony created a prototype PlayStation controller that contained a built-in emulator loaded with 10 bundled games. Originally, executives considered manufacturing and releasing this device exclusively in Brazil. They specifically designed it as a loophole to bypass strict import issues in the region. Ultimately, the PlayStation Pulga project never saw a full release.
Meanwhile, the SharpEmu project remains in its very early development stages. Major gaming companies like Nintendo aggressively pursue litigation against console emulation. Therefore, the gaming community is anxiously waiting to see how Sony handles this Astro Bot development in the days ahead.
