Punjab’s plan to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) education for students from Grade I to V has been delayed due to the lack of computers, internet connectivity, and trained teachers in thousands of government schools across the province.
The Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) has completed the AI curriculum framework, but the formal government notification required to begin implementation has yet to be issued. As a result, textbook development, printing, and classroom planning remain on hold.
The delay has also highlighted the gap between the province’s digital education ambitions and the ground realities in public schools.
Schools Face Infrastructure Challenges
According to government records, many primary schools do not have computer laboratories, while numerous rural schools continue to struggle with unreliable electricity and poor internet access. In many cases, students have never used a computer.
Officials also acknowledge that establishing computer labs, purchasing digital devices, and maintaining the required infrastructure across thousands of schools would require significant additional funding, making an immediate province-wide rollout difficult.
AI May Be Introduced Through Existing Subjects
Education officials are considering introducing basic AI concepts through existing subjects during the initial phase instead of launching AI as a standalone subject.
The phased approach would allow students to learn foundational digital concepts while schools gradually receive the necessary infrastructure.
Teacher training remains another major challenge. Educators say most government primary school teachers have not received professional training in artificial intelligence, computational thinking, or digital technologies.
Experts warn that introducing AI without adequately training teachers could result in the subject being taught only theoretically rather than through practical learning.
Rollout Remains on Hold
Education specialists believe AI education for young learners should focus on logical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and responsible use of technology rather than advanced programming.
Although PECTAA has already developed a curriculum covering basic computing, data science, machine learning, robotics, and ethical AI, the rollout cannot proceed until the government grants formal approval and schools are equipped with the necessary facilities.
