The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has directed all Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISEs) to begin the process of de-affiliating private high and higher secondary schools that are not registered with the Private Schools Regulatory Authority (PSRA).
The directive was issued by the Elementary and Secondary Education Department on the instructions of Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi, who serves as the controlling authority of all education boards in the province.
According to an official notification, education boards have been instructed to issue notices to all unregistered schools, giving them three months to obtain mandatory PSRA registration.
Schools that fail to complete the registration process within the deadline will have their affiliations withdrawn in accordance with the relevant laws.
The department has also directed all education boards to submit compliance reports after the notice period, detailing the schools that obtained registration and those whose affiliations were cancelled.
Education Secretary Mohammad Khalid said the provincial government would take legal action against institutions operating without PSRA registration. He added that de-affiliated schools would only regain their affiliation after completing the required registration process.
According to PSRA Managing Director Javed Iqbal, a total of 387 private high and higher secondary schools across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remain unregistered despite being affiliated with education boards.
The breakdown includes:
- 196 schools affiliated with the Peshawar Board
- 100 schools with the Swat Board
- 47 schools with the Mardan Board
- 15 schools with the Abbottabad Board
- 12 schools with the Bannu Board
- 10 schools with the Malakand Board
- 4 schools with the Dera Ismail Khan Board
The move is aimed at ensuring that all private schools comply with provincial regulatory requirements and operate under the legal framework established by the PSRA.
