The federal government’s fuel expenditure has increased by around 190% in five years, rising from Rs. 7.52 billion in fiscal year 2020-21 to Rs. 21.77 billion in 2024-25.
According to a document presented before Parliament, the increase in fuel spending was primarily attributed to rising fuel prices.
Fuel expenditure by federal ministries, departments, and attached institutions stood at Rs. 7.52 billion in FY2020-21. It increased to Rs. 8.35 billion in FY2021-22 before nearly doubling to Rs. 15.66 billion in FY2022-23.
The expenditure remained almost unchanged at Rs. 15.67 billion in FY2023-24 but rose sharply to Rs. 21.77 billion in FY2024-25.
In its response submitted to Parliament, the government attributed the increase mainly to higher fuel prices and did not provide a separate explanation regarding changes in fuel consumption.
The figures highlight the significant rise in the government’s fuel bill over the five-year period, with fuel costs becoming a larger expenditure for federal ministries, departments, and attached institutions.
