Google’s compliance with Pakistani regulations has reached 88%, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez Ur Rehman.
The PTA chairman made the remarks during the launch of Google’s Digital Pasban program, highlighting the regulator’s ongoing engagement with technology and social media companies over digital safety and compliance with local laws.
Hafeez Ur Rehman said the PTA receives around 500 social media-related complaints every day.
He added that the authority holds in-person meetings with social media companies every two months, while he personally participates in weekly online meetings with their representatives to discuss Pakistani laws and regulatory requirements.
According to the PTA chairman, regular communication with technology platforms is helping improve compliance with local regulations.
Hafeez Ur Rehman also highlighted measures being taken to improve connectivity across Pakistan, describing reliable digital access as increasingly important in modern life.
He noted that Pakistan auctioned 480 MHz of spectrum in March, the highest amount of spectrum offered in a single auction in the country, as part of efforts to improve connectivity and digital services.
The PTA chairman said the rapid development of new technologies has increased the need for updated regulations and regulatory frameworks.
The PTA chairman also raised concerns about children’s increasing use of digital platforms.
He noted that children today spend more time indoors and on digital platforms compared with previous generations, making cooperation between parents, regulators, and technology companies increasingly important.
Hafeez Ur Rehman emphasized the need to create safer online spaces for children and future generations.
He said stronger cooperation between parents and regulators would be necessary to address challenges linked to growing digital platform use and promote more responsible use of social media in Pakistan.
