Bitcoin (BTC) slipped below the $80,000 level during Tuesday’s Wall Street session as traders assessed falling US bond yields and shifting expectations for monetary policy.
Bitcoin dropped as low as $78,111 on Bitstamp after reaching a 14-week high of $81,265. The cryptocurrency struggled to turn the $80,000 level into firm support as selling pressure increased during US trading hours.
Bitcoin Struggles to Hold $80,000
The $80,000 zone had previously been identified by traders as an area of significant selling pressure.
The latest decline came alongside weakness in gold, which also retreated after reaching multimonth highs. Gold fell to around $4,605 per ounce, representing a decline of nearly 2% on the day.
The simultaneous movement in Bitcoin and gold came as US equities posted modest gains. The S&P 500 rose around 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained approximately 0.5%.
US Bond Yields Continue to Decline
US Treasury yields continued to ease on Tuesday, with the 30-year yield falling below 5.2% and approaching its lowest level since August 7.
Lower bond yields have remained an important factor for financial markets as investors assess liquidity conditions and expectations for Federal Reserve policy.
Market participants are also watching potential government measures affecting the bond market, while expectations for near-term interest-rate cuts remain limited amid persistent inflation concerns.
Fed Decision and Inflation Data in Focus
Attention is now shifting toward upcoming US economic data and the Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole economic symposium.
The July Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, the Fed’s preferred inflation measure, is scheduled for release on Wednesday.
Market participants will closely monitor the data for clues about the future direction of US monetary policy and its potential impact on risk assets such as Bitcoin.
Meanwhile, markets are also preparing for Nvidia’s earnings report, which could create additional volatility across technology and cryptocurrency markets.
Bitcoin Faces Key Macro Catalysts
Bitcoin’s inability to firmly reclaim $80,000 leaves the cryptocurrency at a critical level as traders assess broader market conditions.
With US inflation data, Federal Reserve expectations, bond yields, and Nvidia earnings all in focus, Bitcoin could remain sensitive to developments across traditional financial markets in the coming sessions.
