Riot Games is finally giving players what they want. After a 17-year wait, League of Legends will officially receive a team voice chat feature. This massive update arrives just one week before the 2026 World Championships. Soon, millions of daily active players will coordinate strategies directly in-game without relying on external apps.
League of Legends Patch 26.20 Brings Voice Chat & Cosmetics
The highly anticipated feature launches on Wednesday, October 7, in Patch 26.20. However, Riot is locking access behind a behavior wall. You must reach Honor level 3 or higher to use the new team voice chat. Developers Paul “Pabro” Bellezza and Andre “Meddler” Van Roon confirmed this strategy. Furthermore, the rollout will happen in phases. North America and Oceania will get access first. South Korea, Brazil, and Latin America will follow shortly after.
Technically, Riot is stepping up its game. The upcoming patch introduces improved noise cancellation. It also delivers better stability and faster connections. Moreover, Riot plans to monetize the feature. Players will have the option to purchase “voice skins” as cosmetic modifiers for their in-game chats.
Meanwhile, parents can still use existing parental controls to restrict this feature. Naturally, the League of Legends subreddit is already debating the update. Many users expressed hesitation and continue to question how Riot Games will moderate the voice channels and punish bad actors.
New Content for Modern & Classic League
Riot is also expanding other areas of the franchise. Modern League of Legends enters Season 3, Act 2 with a brand-new music theme. Riot is set to reveal the full details on this theme today, September 9.
Additionally, League of Legends Classic continues to grow. This throwback mode, based on the 2013 third season, receives Patch 26.18 tomorrow, September 10. The update adds Poppy, Galio, and Shyvana to the roster. Finally, developers promised that Bilgewater characters, including Graves, will arrive in League Classic at a later date.
