Valve has officially announced the pricing and release schedule for its highly anticipated Steam Frame virtual reality headset. This reveal follows the recent launch of the Steam Machine and Steam Controller. The new VR headset enters a competitive market. It directly challenges rivals like the Meta Quest. However, it carries a significantly higher price tag.
Next-Gen VR Features & Hardware Prices
Valve is not new to the virtual reality space. Previously, the company collaborated with HTC to produce the HTC Vive in the 2010s. Later, it launched its own Valve Index in 2019. Now, the Steam Frame builds upon that established legacy. It offers upgraded technical specifications. Furthermore, it features inside-out tracking. Most importantly, users can operate the device entirely wirelessly without a physical PC connection.
Valve offers two storage variants for the new headset. First, the 256GB version costs $1,059 USD. Meanwhile, the premium 1TB model will set buyers back $1,299 USD.
Waitlist Deadlines & Strict Anti-Scalping Rules
If you want to buy the headset, you must act quickly. Interested gamers can join the official waitlist on Valve’s website right now. However, Valve will close this list this Thursday, September 17, at 10:00 PM PKT / 10:00 AM PT. After that deadline, the company will randomly select entrants. Valve will send email notifications within 24 hours to confirm if you made the reservation queue or if you remain on the waitlist.
Consequently, the first group of chosen buyers can purchase their headsets starting this Friday, September 18. Once notified, buyers have exactly 72 hours to complete their transaction. Otherwise, Valve will immediately pass the opportunity to the next person in line.
Valve also introduced strict measures to stop scalpers. First, buyers can only sign up for one model’s waitlist. Additionally, Valve strictly limits purchases to one unit per household. The company will actively monitor shipping addresses and payment details to enforce this rule. Furthermore, users cannot sell or transfer their reservation access.
Exclusive Valve Steam Frame Accessories & Upgrades
Alongside the headset, Valve announced several dedicated accessories. Buyers can purchase a 45W USB-C charger for $29. However, the existing Steam Deck charger or any standard 45W charger will work perfectly. Secondly, the Steam Frame Ergonomic Accessories Kit costs $59. This kit includes two controller hand straps, a top headset strap, and an extended light blocker. Finally, a $49 replacement kit provides a spare gasket, cushion, and light blocker.
Importantly, Valve restricts these accessory purchases exclusively to verified Steam Frame buyers. Therefore, scalpers cannot easily hoard the add-ons.
Users can also enhance their setup with third-party options. Zenni offers prescription lens inserts for glasses-free gaming. Additionally, users can buy the Arcturus Vision Camera. This add-on unlocks 5K HDR color passthrough and spatial video capture capabilities for the headset. Fans will soon see if Valve can dominate the VR market again when the reservation queue opens later this week.
