At least 4,500 people were victims of dacoity, robbery, snatching, burglary, theft and vehicle theft in Islamabad this year, losing belongings worth over Rs3 billion.
Capital police data shows 4,504 such incidents were registered between January 1 and September 30. Six people were killed and 44 injured, including 22 with bullet wounds.
Of the total, 518 incidents took place in houses and 187 at commercial centres. Cash worth Rs998.51 million and valuables worth Rs1,699.82 million were looted or stolen, along with 868 tolas of gold, 97 vehicles, 1,905 motorcycles and 1,781 mobile phones.
Police sources said the actual figures are considerably higher, as dozens of FIRs were sealed or kept confidential because the victims were foreigners or important personalities.
Police registered 10 dacoity cases, in which one person was killed and four were injured. Gangs took Rs26.36 million in cash, valuables worth Rs9.54 million, two tolas of gold, two motorcycles and 14 mobile phones.
There were 993 robberies, including 28 in houses and 40 at commercial centres. Nine were committed after the victims were kidnapped, one allegedly by policemen and another by people disguised as officials.
Five people were killed and 35 injured, 22 of them by gunfire. Robbers took Rs297.02 million in cash, valuables worth Rs155.21 million, 81 tolas of gold, seven vehicles, 200 motorcycles and 1,082 mobile phones.
Police recorded 551 snatching incidents, five in houses and four at commercial centres. Cash worth Rs115.83 million, valuables worth Rs40.62 million, 17.5 tolas of gold, four vehicles, 11 motorcycles and 458 mobile phones were snatched.
There were 627 burglaries, 512 of them in houses. Burglars stole Rs151.82 million in cash, valuables worth Rs447.70 million, 499.64 tolas of gold, seven motorcycles and 328 mobile phones.
Police registered 1,304 thefts, including 485 in houses and 143 at commercial centres. One victim was injured. Thieves took Rs407.48 million in cash and valuables worth Rs809.36 million.
They also stole 626.28 tolas of gold, two vehicles, 18 motorcycles, 543 mobile phones, 39 laptops, two meters, 29 batteries, including vehicle batteries, 26 vehicle tyres, eight transformers, 10 bicycles and 105 animals.
A couple of Safe City cameras and other equipment were also stolen. In addition, 84 vehicle thefts and 1,667 motorcycle thefts were registered.
Contacted on Monday, DIG Operations Ali Waseem said police had arrested criminals and recovered valuables. He promised to provide details of arrests and recoveries, but the information had not been provided three days later despite repeated requests.
