YouTube appears to be quietly building a standalone social app. Hidden code in the latest YouTube Android update references a project called “Tamba.” It includes followers, direct messages, group chats, and voice replies. The discovery suggests Google may be developing an entirely new social platform.
The findings emerged from an APK teardown of YouTube version 21.44.534 for Android. Developers found a separate application package named com.google.android.youtube.sandbox. YouTube’s code treats this package as its own distinct app entirely. It gets its own search suggestions and file providers, just like a standalone product.

The project carries dedicated branding already. Researchers found a Tamba logo featuring bold text beside a scribbled design. A play button sits cut out of that design, linking it visually to YouTube. Additionally, the teardown uncovered 38 new icons associated with the project.
The social features described in the code look remarkably complete. Strings reference followers, follow requests, and accepted message requests. Direct text messaging and group chat functionality also appear prominently. Users could apparently heart posts and reply with voice notes.
Notably, YouTube Shorts integrate directly into Tamba’s experience. Code suggests Shorts can play within Tamba chats themselves. They also appear accessible from the app’s bottom navigation bar. This positions the platform around YouTube’s existing short-form video ecosystem.

Some additional icons hint at features still under development. Crown, lock, and game controller icons appear without associated imagery. These suggest potential gamification, privacy controls, or gaming integration. However, none have confirmed functionality yet.
One privacy detail has already raised eyebrows among researchers. A code string suggests someone could follow you before you finish signing up. This means a social graph could form around your Google account preemptively. However, the final product could handle this differently than the code implies. It must be noted that these are just information based off of leaks, and not a confirmation from YouTube or Google.
Tamba fits into a broader pattern of YouTube expanding aggressively beyond traditional video. The platform recently added phone controls for connected TV viewing. It overhauled its branded content disclosure system for creators. It also introduced locally sourced affiliate products through its Shopping program. Meanwhile, YouTube now commands 13.4% of all US TV viewing, ahead of Netflix. Together, these moves show YouTube pushing into commerce, living rooms, and now potentially social networking simultaneously.
Importantly, APK teardowns reveal work-in-progress code only. Nothing guarantees Tamba will ship as a public product.
