Apple has introduced the AirPods 5 with better sound, stronger noise cancellation, and a lower price. The new earbuds keep Apple’s open-ear design and sit below the Pro lineup. The AirPods 5 are available in two versions. The base model comes with a standard USB-C charging case. The second version adds a wireless charging case and touch controls on the stems.
Both models now support active noise cancellation (ANC). Apple says the AirPods 5 offer the best ANC available on an open-ear design. The company also claims they block up to 50% more external noise than the previous generation.
Transparency mode has also been improved. Apple says it can reproduce voices and nearby sounds more naturally. This should make it easier to stay aware of the surroundings while wearing the earbuds.
The AirPods 5 feature a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. These changes are designed to deliver richer and more detailed audio. Apple also says the new design fits a wider range of ear shapes.
Personalized Spatial Audio has been improved as well. The earbuds also add hands-free Siri features when paired with an Apple Intelligence-ready iPhone. Users can interact with Siri using head gestures. A head nod can confirm a request, while a head shake can reject it. The wireless charging model also adds swipe controls on the stem for adjusting volume.
Battery life has received an upgrade too. The AirPods 5 offer up to 5 hours of listening with ANC enabled. That is 1 hour longer than the previous generation. The wireless charging model provides up to 22 hours of total battery life. Both versions also receive an IP57 rating, adding temporary immersion resistance beyond basic splash protection.
Apple has priced the AirPods 5 at $129/€149. The model with wireless charging and touch controls costs $149/€169. Pre-orders are now open, with availability starting September 18.
