Apple to kill 3.5 mm adapter and bring USB-Type C 18W chargers

Apple didn’t kill the 3.5 mm headphone jack, it just moved it to an adapter. However, the company now plans to kill the adapter. According to an analyst at Barclays, Apple will drive the final nail the coffin this year as the new iPhone models will not come bundled with a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapters. According to a leak from Chongdiantou, the company plans to use the new USB-C standard for the 2018 iPhones’ charger that comes in the box.

The alleged charger will have a new oval design and support an updated USB-Type C port that can charge up to 18W of power delivery current, thus, the cable that would come with this new charger that would be USB-Type C.

It should have been pretty clear that the adapter was indicating that they are ending 3.5mm jacks and Apple indicated that in a couple of years more consumers will move to Bluetooth headphones or wired Lightning headphones.

However, Apple’s 2017 iPhones which are iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, all come with a 5W charger and a USB-A to Lightning cable even though all 2017 iPhones support faster charging via the USB power delivery standard.

This new default Apple charger would make it easier for new-generation of MacBook owners who struggle with only having USB-C ports. This is certainly a move that Apple should have made in 2017.

The tech giant Apple offering a higher-capacity charger out of the box and killing the 3.5mm adapter shows that the company is certainly showing a lot of courage since they were the first company to kill the 3.5mm jack.
